Description

My daughter calls these “COASTER SIZE”. This beautiful slab is irregular yet circle shaped.  This is the item you will receive, beautiful neutral colors.

This 220 million year old Petrified Wood Slab has been sliced and polished. Polishing allows the inner detail and coloration to easily be seen.

Petrified Wood Slab.   This fossils has been turned into stone (fossilized) through the permineralization process. All of the organic matter becomes replaced by minerals, so while much of the original structure such as tree rings is retained. For this to happen the wood needs to be buried in an environment both low in oxygen and with flowing, mineral-rich water. The coloration is due to the various minerals that are present during fossilization. For example red colors are due to iron compounds, greens due to copper, etc.

The wood is found in certain sections of Madagascar Petrified Wood because in the past it was a forest. Today the forest is gone but the petrified wood remains. When polished much of the color is revealed. The colors may not be as vibrant as Arizona fossils but the colors are still amazing. The colors from Petrified Wood Slab are generally earth-toned and still present well.

This piece of Petrified Wood Slab is from the Triassic period. Because there was so much heavy metal and iron when fossilized it has these colors.
