Rochester Shale Silurian Fauna Fossils

Rochester Shale Fossils are spectacular in their preservation. These come from one location primarily from Middleport, New York. These Silurian fossils were buried some 400 million ago during a storm event. New York was once a warm tropical sea near the equator. Hurricanes often ravaged the seas but also came on land. These creatures lived in the shallow lagoons and coastal areas and as the storm passed it destroyed the ecosystem. As the storms came ashore they would was sediment such as dirt, clay, sand and other fine grained sediments into the shallow seas burying the animals. Over time the fine sediments formed a shale that protected the fossils until revealed. These are some of the best preserved fossils that can be found. They are prepared by one of our Paleo Partners that has worked the area for decades.
